New Jersey files a notice of appeal in the legalized sports betting case

3/14/2013

New Jersey has filed notice it will appeal a judge's decision halting the state's plans to implement legalized sports betting. Wednesday's filing means the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia likely will hear the case in the next few months. The state's action was expected after two recent rulings by a federal judge in Trenton. The first held that the four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA could proceed with a lawsuit against New Jersey because they had demonstrated legal standing to do so.  The second, on Feb. 28, upheld the constitutionality of a 1992 law banning sports gambling in all but four states. Gov. Chris Christie has said he's prepared to take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
